How to choose a blue gel polish
Blue is a colour people ask for less often than pink or red, and then for a very specific reason: a wedding outfit to match, a summer holiday, a sky-blue pastel they saw in a picture. It is also a colour that flatters more hands than most people expect, because it makes the skin look warmer by contrast.
This page puts every blue we sell in one place, from sky blue to deep navy, across gel polish and the other gels in the range. Each opens on its own product page with the shade selected. For other colours see green, purple and pink, and for the whole range gel polish.
Light, bright or deep
Sky and baby blues are pastel and soft, close to a pale grey-blue, and read as fresh and clean. Bright and royal blues are saturated and look bold on short and long nails alike. Navy and midnight are so deep that from a distance they read close to black, with a richness black does not have. Choose by how much you want the colour to be noticed.
Blue and the skin
Blue sits opposite orange on the colour wheel, so it makes golden and warm skin look warmer and brighter. Cool, fair skin suits the softer sky and periwinkle blues, which look gentle against it. Whichever you choose, hold the photo beside your hand in daylight before you decide.
Pastels need thin coats
A pale blue shows brush marks and uneven coverage the way a white does. Apply over a base coat, such as the Viraa Pro Base Coat, use thin coats, keep the brush flat and moving, and cure each one before the next. Two or three thin coats beat one thick one. A deep navy needs the same care for a different reason: thick dark pigment cures on the surface and stays soft underneath.
Ways to wear it
- Blue and white. A sky blue with white accents is a clean, fresh combination. See the pale shades on the milky white page.
- Blue and gold. A navy with a gold accent or line is a classic evening set; see gold.
- Matte. A matte top coat turns a navy suede-like. See the matte top coat guide.
- With chrome. The Viraa Pro Mirror Chrome Powder has a blue-toned shade among its five. A chrome over a dark blue gives a deep metallic; see chrome powder and mirror top coats.
Finish with the right top coat
A clear, glossy top coat keeps a blue true. Some top coats can look slightly yellow over very pale blues, so test one on a tip first. The base coat vs top coat guide explains what to look for, and the options are in top and base coat.
