How to choose a pink gel polish

Pink is the widest colour family there is. It runs from a barely-there baby pink that looks like a healthy nail, through dusty rose and soft coral-pink, to hot pink and magenta that nobody can miss. That range is the reason it is one of the most asked-for colours in any salon, and the reason it is hard to choose from a name on a bottle.

This page puts every pink we sell in one place, across gel polish, effect gels, polygel and builder gel, so you can compare them side by side. Each opens on its own product page with the shade selected. For quieter colours see nude and milky white; for a stronger one, red. The whole range is in gel polish.

Decide how loud it should be

Pale pinks, the baby pinks and soft blush shades, read as clean and natural and sit close to a nude. Mid pinks, rose and dusty pink, are the everyday crowd-pleasers. Hot pink and magenta are statement colours that carry a whole set on their own. Decide the volume first, then choose within it.

Match the undertone

Pinks lean cool (towards blue and mauve) or warm (towards peach and coral). A cool, rosy pink tends to flatter fair and cool skin and makes the nails look bright and fresh. A warm pink with peach in it suits golden and deeper skin tones. If you are not sure, hold the photo beside your hand in daylight and choose the one that makes the skin look brighter, not duller.

Pink in more than one product

Colour is not only gel polish. The pinks on this page include the Sparkle Gel Polish, a soft shimmer in nudes, pinks and mauves for a gentle sparkle, as well as the glitters in glitter gel polish. For extensions, polygel and builder gel come in pinks, so the colour can be built into the nail instead of painted on. Cat eye gels have a pink among their shades; see cat eye gel polish and the cat eye guide.

Ways to wear it

  • Pink and white. A soft pink fading into white is the classic baby-boomer ombre. Blend it with an ombre brush; the nail art brushes have the rest.
  • Matte. A matte top coat turns a pink velvety and slightly deeper. The matte top coat guide shows how to apply it evenly.
  • With a French tip. A pale pink base with a white tip is a softer French than white on clear.
  • As an accent. One hot pink nail over a quiet set is the simplest way to add colour.

Getting an even finish

Pale pinks show brush marks the way whites do, so use thin coats, cure each one, and apply over a base coat; the Viraa Pro Base Coat gives an even foundation. Seal with a clear top coat. Base coat vs top coat explains why each layer matters.

The pink lamp

Some clients find a standard cure uncomfortable on the skin. The pink lamps in the strip above use a pink LED light for that reason, and they cure the same gels. The full range is at nail lamps.

For a salon

Pinks sell all year. For bulk prices on whole ranges, see wholesale, and for top and base coats, top and base coat.

Which pink gel polish suits my skin tone?
Cool, rosy pinks tend to suit fair and cool skin. Warm pinks with peach or coral in them suit golden and deeper skin tones. Hold the shade beside your hand in daylight and choose the one that makes your skin look brighter.
How do I stop pink gel polish looking streaky?
Pale pinks show brush marks. Use thin coats, keep the brush moving, and cure each coat before the next. Two or three thin coats over a base coat give a more even result than one thick coat.
What is the difference between baby pink and hot pink?
Baby pink is pale and soft and sits close to a nude. Hot pink is bright, saturated and leans towards magenta. Baby pink looks natural; hot pink is a statement.
Can I do a pink and white ombre with gel polish?
Yes. Apply the pink and the white side by side while still uncured and blend the join with an ombre brush, then cure. It takes a little practice, so try it on a practice stand first.
Does the pink lamp cure differently?
It uses a pink LED light, made for clients who find a standard cure uncomfortable on the skin. It cures the same UV and LED gels.
Is pink gel polish soak-off?
Yes. Buff the top layer to break the seal, wrap each nail in an acetone-soaked pad for the full time, and lift the gel away. Never peel or scrape it.
